Kyla Tomlinson
A graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Kyla gained a BDes Hons in Animation and Electronic Media, 2001. Specialising in animation, she continued her research within production, direction and performance, completing an Msc in Electronic Imaging in 2003.
Working mainly as a freelance animator and artist, she has collaborated on projects commissioned by BBC, S4C and Channel 4, under the direction of Ink. Animations, Dundee and Red Kite Animattions, Edinburgh.
On a short-term basis she has also gained experience at Pascal Blais in Montreal and within Beryl Productions, Cardiff, working alongside award winner Joanna Quinn.
She has also had her artwork featured in several exhibitions throughout Tayside and North Ayrshire and has enjoyed teaching at both primary and higher education.
Kyla’s current research focuses upon character performance, story structure and the visual aesthetic. It is the emotional state of a character that brings belief to performance. Only by thoroughly observing the essence of human nature can the subtleties of gesture be reflected through figure portrayal. It is the careful observation of motion, human form and being that Kyla aims to capture through the medium of animation.
Committed to the understanding of the principles of story, elements of screenwriting, such as genre, substance, structure and style are also essential to Kyla’s research. By learning the primary craft of writing, she intends to maintain her creativity through fresh and innovative ideas.
Visual style lends itself as a secondary device to story and performance, but plays an important role in animation production. As a powerful tool of communication, the use of image can convey a diversity of ideals, beliefs and expression. Through developing a unique visual language, Kyla intends to convey emotional content significant to the principles and ideas of her animations.
The combined influence of performance, story and image is the driving force behind her research and she aspires to achieve work that will excite and inspire others!
