EDINBURGH START-UP WINS “BEST ANIMATION” AT MOBIFEST TORONTO

A short film made by Binary Fable, a new animation company based in Edinburgh, was selected as “Best Animation” at Mobifest Toronto 08 last week. Mobifest is the international film festival for made-for-mobile films.

The film, About Here: Culross Abbey , tells the legend of sixth-century Princess Thenaw. Thenaw survived two death sentences to give birth to Saint Mungo – the patron saint of Glasgow – in Culross. However, despite her miraculous escape, her fame has been eclipsed by that of her son.

About Here: Culross Abbey screened in competition at Toronto’s Revue Cinema on Wednesday, 19 November 08. It was the only UK entry to win an award, beating competition from around the world.

The film was one of two commissioned from Binary Fable by Pocket Shorts Scotland in January 08 – the fledgling company’s first commission. The films were launched at an event at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival in June and both were selected as finalists for Mobifest Toronto 08.

Helen Jackson, an animator and director at Binary Fable, said: “We were delighted that these two films were selected for Mobifest, and honoured that About Here: Culross Abbey won ‘Best Animation’. Binary Fable’s first year has been a great success and we plan to continue to produce innovative, award-winning animation here in Edinburgh.”

Pocket Shorts Scotland’s Project Coordinator, Jason Hall, said: “The extremely high quality of Binary Fable’s final work for their Pocket Shorts project, About Here, is there for all to see but – more importantly – their whole approach throughout the development and production of the project was exemplary. It was great to work with two people with such passion for their work and an utter commitment to ensure that every element of the project – from the user experience to the production values, technical issues and marketing and promotion of the completed work – was carefully considered for maximum effect. It was a real joy to work with Helen and Adam.”
