Award for J03
Following on from a successful festival year for the short This is J03, Once Were Farmers and The Gate Films are delighted to announce that, further to it’s shortlisting for the Cartoon D’or in November 2008, This is J03 has won the New Media jury prize at the Ourense International Film Festival, Spain.
The awards ceremony was on Saturday 17th October 2009 and although none of the Farmers could attend, they sent a video link for their acceptance! This is J03 was a short film, based on a ‘Exquisite Corpse’ style blog, written by advertising agencies and realised in a live action, 3D animation mix to demonstrate the production skills of both companies.

Selina’s Blueberry

News from Axis
Gold Win at the Roses Design Awards
2009 saw the inaugural Games category within the Roses Design Awards. Axis was delighted to pick up six nominations for recent work, including Killzone 2, F1 2009 and Rogue Warrior. The Axis team was even more delighted to win Gold in the Best Use of Animation category for the Killzone 2 trailer. view here
Motorstorm Arctic Edge
Axis have followed up the success of their work on Motorstorm Pacific Rift and are back working on the unstoppable Motorstorm game brand for Bigbig Studios and Sony. Directed by Dana Dorian the video content for Arctic Edge required the Axis crew to create both CG VFX integrated into live action and complete CG scenes. view here

The Journey premiering in New York
For the past two months Axis have been working with film director and ex-Skids frontman Richard Jobson on a short film called The Journey. The Journey is the brainchild of actress Emma Thompson and illustrates the brutal experiences of women sold into the sex trade and was created to highlight the work of the Helen Bamber Foundation. At the premiere in New York on the 9th November the film will form a new part to the interactive exhibition that originally stood in Trafalgar Square last year. Axis has been completing a range of VFX and animation for the film and is delighted to be supporting such a great cause.

Animation was once a relatively simple matter, using fairly primitive means to produce rather short films of subjects that were generally comedic and often quite childish. However, things have changed, and they continue changing at a maddening pace. One new technique after another has made it easier, faster, and above all cheaper to produce the material, which has taken on an increasing variety of forms.
The Historical Dictionary of Animation and Cartoons is an introduction to all aspects of animation history and its development as a technology and industry beyond the familiar cartoons from the Disney and Warner Bros. Studios. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, photos, a bibliography, and over 200 cross-referenced dictionary entries on animators, directors, studios, techniques, films, and some of the best-known characters.
Nichola Dobson is an independent scholar based in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is currently researching in the areas of animation studies and television genre.
